Introduction
Candy—a dachshund who
was my family, my daughter, my best friend. Now she is in Heaven, smiling down
at me.
“Oh Ben, where are you?” I stumbled through the
Dog Park—where dogs could play and run freely. I was looking for my dog
Ben, a one-year-old dachshund. He was lost.
I’d been looking for him in that park for more than two hours, but he was nowhere to be found. “Ben!” I shouted. He didn’t appear. I wandered around the park. The sun began to set. People and their dogs began to leave, but my Ben was still missing.
...
On the night she died, before she went to
sleep, Candy gave my mother some big kisses on her cheeks. Then, she passed
away in her sleep. The next day, my mother got up early, wanting to give her daily
pain killers. But Candy was already gone—resting peacefully.
“She died with a smile on her face,” my mother
told me on the phone. “I think she was dreaming of you.” Then, my mother began
to cry.
I dropped my phone, weeping uncontrollably. The
guilt crushed me. I wasn’t a good mother. I wasn’t there for Candy when she
needed me most, and I wasn’t there to hold her when she passed. Instead, she
was left to only dream about us being together. It was all my fault. I should
have taken her to the clinic for regular checkups; I should have caught it
sooner. I couldn’t stop crying. I had lost my Candy—my daughter, my best
friend, my entire world. I had lost her forever.
My mother prepared a small coffin for Candy,
placing her gently inside wrapped with all her favorite toys. On the day of the
burial, snow began to fall, even though it was already mid-April—it felt as if
the heavens themselves were weeping for our loss.
Candy was laid to rest beneath a massive elm tree on a quiet hill. I make the journey to visit her grave every single year on April 10th. And every time I stand there, I can clearly picture her, sitting happily among the grass and flashing me her beautiful, unforgettable smile.
