Introduction
A
minute ago, I was homeless. And now, I’m living in a castle, waiting for old
James Taylor to die and inherit his fortune. But I was wrong. Dead wrong.
Honestly,
I’m very tired. I’m happy, though. Fourteen days ago, I
was homeless, sleeping in a park in Austin. And now I’m a decent man, living in
a castle in London. It’s kind of a miracle, isn’t it?
“Chad!” shouts the old
man, who’s in the next room. No doubt, he’s asking me to take him to the loo.
I wonder why the British would use this word, ‘loo’ instead of ‘toilet’.
Every fourteen minutes James
would call me to take him there. But every time, he just sits there for
fourteen seconds and then goes back to his room. It’s weird that he doesn’t
wear a watch, but he knows exactly how much time he stays there—always 14
seconds.
“What an odd man!” I
grumble as I get up from my comfortable bed, heading to his room.
This is his—oh, I
forget how many times—probably his hundredth time going to the loo. I’m not
good at math. Well, I was a football player. I’m only good at playing
football. Oh, right, and women.
“Thank you, kid,” the
old man says with a weak smile as I help him back to his bed.
Looking down at the
scrawny old man, I force a smile. “Sure.” Then I practically run out of his
gloomy room.
Yes, his room makes me
feel depressed and sad, and a little bit scared, even though it also makes me
feel weirdly energetic. James’ room is not quite as big as I thought it would
be when I first saw the castle from the front gate.
James is not a lord or anything;
he’s just a billionaire who bought this castle years ago—at least, according to
the lawyer who found me. I haven’t heard his name, though. I don’t know or care
about billionaires. And I never imagined I’d become one of them.
It’s kind of like
magic, isn’t it? Actually, it’s not. I’m just lucky. Before I was 27, I was a
good football player, making good money and having beautiful girlfriends. Then,
I got a serious girlfriend named Anna Wilson, who was a sweet nurse. Most
importantly, she was a very gorgeous blonde. Anna took me to Las Vegas, and we
had fun. From then on, I was addicted to gambling and ended up losing
everything. Anna left me.
Then my parents died in
a car accident. I sold their house and went to South
Korea, where I tried to find myself. While I was
there, I got robbed. But I met a kind American. That man bought me a plane ticket
and gave me some spare change. I soon ran out of money and became homeless.
